Quality of Care Risks

The quality of care travelers receive internationally can vary drastically, as not all countries have the same standards of healthcare. The MEDEX 360°m International Healthcare Rating System assesses countries according to MEDEX’s proprietary credentialing system, measuring medical capabilities, staffing, procedures and performance. These criteria are based on commonly accepted international standards of care.

Countries with Top Quality of Care Ratings

It’s no surprise that many of the most developed and modernized countries are ranked high for their quality of care. However, there are a few countries that have good ratings for Quality of Care, despite higher concerns for Disease and Health Risks, Remoteness Risks and Cultural Challenges.

Rating 2A sampling of countries with healthcare that often meets commonly accepted international standards of care and lower overall ratings due to risks in other categories:

  • Argentina – lower ratings for Remoteness Risks, Cultural Challenges
  • Brazil – lower ratings for Disease and Health Risks, Remoteness Risks, Cultural Challenges
  • Mexico – lower rating for Disease and Health Risks, Cultural Challenges
  • Malaysia – lower ratings for Disease and Health Risks, Cultural Challenge Risks
  • South Africa – lower rating for Disease and Health Risks
  • Dominican Republic – lower rating for Disease and Health Risks, Cultural Challenge Risks
  • Saudi Arabia – lower rating for Remoteness Risks, Cultural Challenges
  • Reunion – lower rating for Disease and Health Risks, Remoteness Risks, Cultural Challenges

While some countries may have high ratings for Quality of Care and Disease and Health Risks, they may also have increased Remoteness Risks (such as difficulty accessing care from rural areas) and Cultural Challenges (such as local medical traditions and practices). These discrepancies can present difficulties for travelers needing medical care.

The following countries are rated Rating 1 for Quality of Care, Disease and Health Risks, but have lower ratings for Cultural Challenges and Remoteness Risks:

  • Canada
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • Malta
  • Norway
  • Sweden

MEDEX 360°m Country Health Ratings assess medical conditions in a specific country. The rating listings are a sample of what is available within MEDEX 360°m and are not specific to any particular destination within a listed country. Larger cities may have better care than remote areas of the same country. This discrepancy may affect a country’s overall rating. A country may also have inconsistent levels of care throughout the country, but certain facilities may provide excellent care. Further detail about specific cities is available in the full MEDEX 360°m country information. Please contact MEDEX for a complete demonstration of this website.
