Armed conflict in the Middle East. Terror threats in the United Kingdom. Civil unrest throughout Africa. Political demonstrations in Mexico and Japan. These events highlight the ongoing importance for international travelers and expatriates to remain vigilant and be prepared for security threats.

While many of the concerns appear to be localized, the potential for widespread reaction is real. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has sparked demonstrations in over 40 countries worldwide. While most of these have been peaceful, they have had the potential to become violent. Groups supporting opposing sides of the issue interact, police attempt to disperse demonstrators, and emotions run high. Demonstrations in South Korea and China were sparked by Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi’s recent visit to a war cemetery. This was accompanied by travel recommendations to avoid Japanese-related businesses in those areas in the short-term. While specific threats cannot be verified today, the thwarted airline terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom may result in smaller scale attacks on Western institutions or threats against Westerners in some nations.

They may arise with little advanced notice, particularly when the events are a response to situations in other parts of the world.
